Modern nature

Bring your Christmas decorations down to earth without foregoing style and sophistication.

Combine natural colours, touches of fresh greenery, the organic grain of wood and clear glass for a contemporary festive feeling. Not forgetting the festive twinkle, of course.

1 A great take-home idea: fill cookie cutters with living moss and dot them around the table or mount onto walls using double-sided tape.

2 Let the grain and colour of a beautiful wooden dining table act as the anchor for your desired look. Instead of covering up with a tablecloth, use a runner made of slubby linen, burlap or any other naturally textured material.

3 Keep the place settings super simple: unadorned white or off-white crockery mixed with vintage-style baroque cutlery (tarnished silver or faux ivory handles are on trend) and clear glass stemware in modern forms.

4 Instead of formal placeholders, write each guest’s name on a plain stationery tag and tie a sprig of rosemary into a wreath with gardener’s twine.

5 A string of traditional fairy lights has a place in every festive setting, but unadorned vintage-style bulbs make for a cute and hip(ster) modern alternative.

6 A strategically placed potted indoor tree such as a ficus, fig or olive tree acts as an eco-friendly and reuseable Christmas-tree substitute.

7 Create visual contrast by pairing terracotta pots and glass vases for your centrepiece. Display silver-green succulents with similarly coloured foliage as well as fragrant potted herbs such as sage and tarragon.
